TESTING OF APPARATUS, PUMPS & LADDERS On Tuesday, July 28th & 29th, 2008, all of the departments fire trucks had their fire pumps, ladders, and hoses tested in accordance with NFPA and Industry Standards. Fire One of Philadelphia PA performed the tests which put the equipment through the very rigorous testing to assure the safety and serviceability of our fire fighting equipment. All of the equipment passed the testing but there were some minor findings: The pump packing of Ladder 203 is leaking heavily, that packing will be attempted to be adjusted and if it is unable to be adjusted it may have to be replaced. Three sections of hose were removed from service, 1-1 ½” 25’ Utility Hose blew a coupling, while the hose in the couplings on 2 sections of 2 ½” hose slid during the testing, which is unacceptable, and those 2-sections have been removed from service. MVI INSPECTION OF APPARATUS On Tuesday, July 28th & 29th, 2008, all of the departments trucks had their Motor Vehicle Inspection Stickers Renewed. During the pumps, ladders and hose testing, personnel transferred vehicles back-and-forth from that testing to Valley Towing for their annual motor vehicle inspections. Members helping move and vehicles and coordinate vehicles during the testing and inspections included: Jim Agar, Eric Smith, Linda Dulaney and Larry Couch. ENGINE 207’s ENGINE BRAKE REPAIRED The Engine Brake on Engine 207 was functioning improperly and was taken to World Wide Equipment in Jane Lew WV for repairs by Captain Jim Agar on Thursday, July 24, 2008. There was a filter in the Engine Brake System that was plugged and was replaced at no charge to the department, because the truck is under warranty. REPLACEMENT OF VEHICLE BATTERIES All of the department’s vehicles have had their batteries replaced. While this may seem a small task when compared to your home vehicle, it is a serious concern where emergency vehicles are concerned, we can’t have the batteries fail when we need to respond to a call and these batteries work hard on every call they’re on. We began this replacement program 3-years ago and will be replacing the batteries every three years to assure they remain in excellent condition. The eight vehicles required replacing a total of 18-batteries as well as the two boat batteries and the one for the Fire Safety Trailer. PUMP OPERATORS CLASS NEAR COMPLETION The classroom portion of the Driver/Pump Operator’s class is complete and three of the departments fire fighters are prepared to test for certification as: Driver/Pump Operator under the 40-hour “Pro-Board Certification” standards. The three New Martinsville Fire Fighters completing the class included: Fred Gaines, Eric Smith and Ben Thomas. The course was taught in-house by Fire Chief, Larry Couch, who is a RESA and WVU Fire Service Extension, Adjunct Fire Service Instructor. FESTIVAL OF MEMORIES SERVICE PROVIDED NMVFD provided assistance to the Festival of Memories, with EMS Coverage, Traffic Control Assistance & Barricades as well as Fire Prevention Activity’s for the Children and coverage for the fire works display. ATV PERFORMS FIRST 2-RESCUE’S With a little more than 1-year with the department, it’s All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) has now performed its first 2-rescue’s. The first was the removal of a Victim of an ATV-Rollover Incident in the woods above Proctor, while the second was the recovery and transport to an awaiting ambulance, of a woman in the CSX Rail Yard. The woman was lost and disoriented and having what she described as a Respiratory Emergency. The ATV has been effectively used on Brush Fires and at various other activities, functions and calls around the area. It is proving to be very versatile and valuable. The vehicle is equipped with a water tank, hose’s, nozzles, a fire pump, and has a victim Rescue/Removal unit on it with a fully enclosed cab and 4-wheel drive capability. The ATV was again requested at 1:16 AM Sunday to respond to an ATV Crash on Cider Run Road but due to the steepness of the area, it was not able to be used although, other dept. equipment (Namely a REEVES SLEEVE) and NMVFD personnel were used to assist Wetzel County EMS evacuate a patient who suffered from a serious spinal injury.
