Services.
All ten of the department’s EMS personnel have completed the training and the
nerve agent antidote equipment is now on-board the departments Ambulance.
The nerve agent antidote is intended for emergency care providers who
accidentally come in contact with an agent and they begin to present with
certain specific effects of the agent. The Instructor for the In-service was
Cindy Glasscock, NREMT-P from the Folsom VFD.
Gather of Present and Incoming City Officials Held
Saturday, June 28th, 2008 NMVFD held an open gathering for present and incoming
City Council Members and the new Mayor. The gathering was to help council to put
a more realistic “face” on what it is the department has and what its needs may
be in the future.
Members helping to prepare trucks and facilities for the visit included: Michael
Owens, Fred Gaines, Ryan Yeater, Linda Dulaney, Cris Jenkins, and Joe Smith.
Apparatus Service & Testing Planned
Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 All of the departments fire apparatus pumps, hose, and
ladders will be inspected and tested. We are also planning to have them
inspected by the department of motor vehicles that day as well.
Fire One, Inc of Philadelphia PA will be here to perform the inspections,
testing all of the equipment in accordance to ISO & NFPA standards.
This years testing is expected to take 2-days because of the addition of some
neighboring departments who also would like to have all of their equipment fully
tested as suggested by the ISO and NFPA Standards.
Illegal Fire Works Seized by Officials
An anonymous call to law enforcement officials led to the seizure of more than
300 pounds of packaged fire works from a van in New Martinsville Wednesday, June
25, 2008.
New Martinsville Patrolman Friend V. Estep and Fire Chief, Larry Couch responded
to the report of the fire works in a van parked on Wetzel Street 200’ West of
Third Street along the South side of the Street. When we approached the vehicle
we were quickly able to identify more than 40 large packages of “display ready”
fire works, the van was literally packed from front to back with fire works,
Couch said.
The van was registered to a St. Clairsville OH, resident. The owner of the
fireworks from Clarington OH, arrived on the scene during the process of the
investigation and was very cooperative in explaining the volume of fireworks and
how they came to be in West Virginia.
We explained the risks and violations that he had committed with the style and
volume of fireworks and he willingly surrendered them to officials, Couch said.
The fireworks were transported from the scene by NMVFD and placed in safe
keeping awaiting pickup by the West Virginia State Police Bomb Technicians.
Our concern was that of the public’s safety, we had nearly 300 lbs of illegal,
unattended , explosives, parked in front of an occupied residence on a
sweltering day, immediate action needed to be taken in getting these fireworks
off-the-street and into a controlled environment. This was made very easy by the
cooperative owner. Had those fireworks ignited, there would have been a
conflagration on Wetzel Street that would like have involved at least 1-2 homes,
and possibly the Verizon Building itself, due to the erupting projectiles, Couch
said.
New Martinsville Police and Fire Officials were assisted at the scene by the
West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office and State Police Officials.
Explosives Technicians from the West Virginia State Police took receipt of the
explosives on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 for proper disposal of the material. The
Technicians confirmed that the fireworks were illegal in WV and received them as
evidence.
